Dating as far back as 700 years, Yemenis were crafted by skilled masters from Yemen (from where they took their name) to Turkey’s South East and Aleppo. Once produced in many towns along the South Eastern region of Turkey, now the traditional craft is reduced to two main areas: Gaziantep and Kilis.

These shoes were worn daily by people living in parts of the Middle East for centuries.¹ Though choices in footwear has probably multiplied by thousands since Yemenis were first around, they managed to remain popular, and even welcomed new-found appreciation as the modern world caught up with their simple but effective design wisdom.

Made fully by hand with the use of simple tools and crafted using natural materials only, the design offers many benefits to the wearer. The breathable material that is leather minimises sweat & odour, while its malleable nature allows the shoes to mould around the wearer’s feet¹, increasing their orthopaedic qualities.
