Hagia Sophia to the Blue Mosque Print

An illustration of the Blue Mosque, drawn from the perspective of Hagia Sophia.

Built in 537 AD and 1616 respectively, both Hagia Sophia and Blue Mosque (Sultan Ahmed Mosque) are landmarks of significance.

The Hagia Sophia anchors the Old City of Istanbul and has served, for centuries, as a place of worship for both Orthodox Christians and Muslims. The Blue Mosque, built to rival Hagia Sophia’s magnificence, is the only mosque in Istanbul with six minarets.

Such a display was previously only preserved for the Prophet’s mosque in Mecca and the sultan was criticised for thinking a bit too highly of himself.
